Two years after he started selling Chinese antiques from his living room in 1967, Isadore Chait opened his first gallery of Asian Art. Today, according to Arts of China, it looks as though he is going to take over the space Sotheby's vacated several years ago.
In addition to the daily operation of one of the prominent Los Angeles galleries, he is a licensed auctioneer in the State of California and holds the only monthly auction in Southern California devoted to Asian Art. His auctions commonly sell out their approximately 400 items, with prices ranging from $100 to $10,000 each. Chait believes in demonstrating through the auctions that collectors do not need to pay extravagant prices for genuine art; as a result of his widespread reputation for ethical business practices, his expert advice is frequently sought by sophisticated art lovers, decorators, beginning collectors and fellow experts alike.
According to Architectural Digest "Isadore Chait, specialist in Oriental sculpture and expert in gemology, has developed a worldwide reputation among museums and collectors, and is frequently consulted by both groups for authentication, market value and appraisals." He is a recommended appraiser for many museums and universities, including the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Norton Simon Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the University of California at Los Angeles, and the Claremont University Center.
He has served on panels of the Appraisers Association of America, as President of their Southern California regional office, and sits on the board of the Los Angeles Gem Council as well as numerous other professional associations. A member of many of the international appraisers' associations, Mr. Chait has been called on to write the tests qualifying other appraisers in his field.
Mr. Chait's expert advice on subjects ranging from Chinese porcelain, price fluctuations, appraisals, and unethical business practices is frequently published by Arts of Asia magazine. He has appeared on Financial News Network, and has authored a series of articles on beginning collecting, now appearing in Antiques West and scheduled for further publication in other antiques and arts periodicals. His overview of the Asian Art market, with current price listings, will be published in Fall of 1993 in the Official Price Guide to Antiques and Collectibles, a Random House publication.
He writes a bimonthly column of advice on collecting Asian Art in Antiques West, and is completing the manuscript for a comprehensive guide to collecting Asian Art.
